30th Birthday Vacation - Greek Islands Part 3: Santorini

On the 6th day of our Greek holiday we took a morning ferry from Milos to Santorini.  This was the only ferry ride that was really rough.  It consisted of about 2.5 hours of me feeling green with seasickness on top of morning sickness -- it wasn't fun.  However, the uncomfortable journey was totally worth it once we arrived at our swanky hotel Adamant Suites located in Fira (the capital city of Santorini).  We spent two nights at this fabulous botique hotel.  Check it out.

Hanging out on the Balcony

After settling in to our hotel, we took a walk around town.

Then we took the bus over to the very touristy town of Oia.  I think every cruise ship in port had an excursion here.  Boatloads of old people filled the streets to catch the famous sunset views.  It was real crowded, so we just speedily snapped photos and then got the hell outta there as fast as we could.

The next day was our one and only full day in Santorini.  We decided to take the bus over to Thera to check out the ancient city of Akrotiri.  A volcanic eruption way way back in 1627 B.C. destroyed the city and covered it in ash, thus preserving the city.  We didn't take the tour, but it actually didn't sound so bad (we eavesdropped on the English one) and would probably be worth doing.

According to Kevin's eavesdropping, barley dating back to the time of the eruption was found in these huge pots.

After getting some learnin' on at the Akrotiri site, we headed over to Kokkini beach.  You have to take a very short hike down the cliffs to access this cool red beach.  It was crowded so we didn't spend too much time here.  We spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out on our hotel balcony.

Our Favorite Restaurants in Fira
We ate here for lunch.  Great seafood and great views.  This was our #1 fave in Fira.

This restaurant was recommended by our hotel.  We ate here for dinner and enjoyed not only the food, but the pretty sunset views as well.  The chef made some very interesting and creative dishes, unfortunately a little too creative for this nauseous preggo.  However, I can tell you the homemade artisan bread was spot on.
